My students across the globe have a myth that different centres present a different level of difficulty of the IELTS test. Not only across countries or regional borders, but also in the same State!

Believe me, it's impossible.

I teach students in India as well as Australia, all have the same level of difficulty.
And, the latest update is that the Reading section in Academic IELTS is really tough (another myth)!

Prices of small cars will go up by Rs 6,000 and large cars by Rs 20,000 as manufacturers decide to pass on the increase in excise on
small cars, two-wheelers by 2% to 10% and large cars, multi-utility and sports utility vehicles to 22%. But so far, only Hyundai has announced a price hike in the range of Rs 6000 to Rs 25000, while other car makers are still studying the fine print.

"This will hamper growth in the short-term," said Pawan Goenka president (automotive) Mahindra & Mahindra.

The passenger car segment has been on a growth path post the fiscal stimulus package that was initiated from December 2008 . According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, passenger car sales in the April-December period grew 25% to 12.16 lakh units, while that of utility vehicles grew 22% to 2.19 lakh units and multi-purpose vehicles grew 37% to 1.19 lakh units.

Industry estimates pegged car sales to cross 1.5 million units for fiscal 2009-10. Currently the entry level and compact cars constitute more than 60% of the car market, with sales at 9.53 lakh units, a growth of 27%.

However, analyts say demand outlook will continue to be robust as the price hike is not too high. "Prices will go up of products across the board, but with the personal tax outgo reduced , it augurs well for the consumer," said Mahantesh Sabarad, auto analyst of Mumbai-based Centrum Broking.

"The excise increase of 2% is not much and will eventually be passed on to customers," said Rajiv Bajaj, MD, of Bajaj Auto, the country’s second largest two-wheeler maker. Prices of two-wheeler products could see a hike of Rs 700 to Rs 1,500.

"We can’t expect the auto industry to grow at 25%, a sustainable growth would be 10-15%," said Rakesh Batra, national leader, automotive practice E&Y. "The increase in excise duty will have a negative impact in the short term," he added. With the global economy showing signs of improvement, there will be pressure on the cost in the long term..

The Economic Times

In what seems like a sign of recovery in the real estate industry, a consortium of three leading developers has proposed what may be the city’s tallest residential building, 486 metres high and having about 125 floors, on Keshavrao Khade Marg near the Mahalaxmi Race Course.
Still at an initial stage, the project’s layout plan was submitted last week to the state-appointed high-rise committee by Joyus Housing Ltd, a consortium floated by three developers, Shapoorji Pallonji, Ackruti and DLF Group.
While the tower will have parking space on six floors, another five floors are proposed to be kept vacant for a refuge area to be used during an emergency; the remaining 114 floors will house flats and suites. The developers have already started planning the process of shifting around 4,000 people, many living in hutments and others in the BMC staff quarters on part of the plot, into transit accommodation.
‘‘As a project, we don’t intend to make it the tallest in the city. As it is, this is at a very early stage and there are still hundreds of clearances to be taken. It will be a lengthy procedure until a final height limit is arrived at and it could take at least two years,’’ said Hemant Shah of Ackruti.

My experience at taking Classes on Management

From the time I started teaching Management subjects online, I have realized some very important facts. We all believe in self-control, empowerment and the power to control others. But, little do we realize the sequence in which these should follow one another.
As I introduced the basics of Organization Behavior and Human Resource Management to budding professionals, students and teachers; I saw how enthusiastic they got when they tasted the power to control others. They were given ample chance to exchange their thoughts openly and share their work experience with the rest of the students. The best part was that the attendees felt really empowered when they were asked to frame the Biographical Traits of Joe, the main character of the case study.
Interestingly, once the students got that power, they found it difficult to control their will to counter and challenge what the other participants recommended. It took a while for the students to realize that despite the continuous suggestions and intermittent replies in the chat box, they all were speaking the same thing. This highlighted the need to reinforce self-control. Does that mean that empowerment and self-control go hand-in-hand?

I am keenly looking forward to conducting the Marketing Session on Jan, 16. The good part is that the participants need not be an MBA or a Manager to understand the basics of Management.

With the threat of Negative Marking looming large on our head, we are very careful while marking answers in CAT. Still, we get some questions answered wrongly. Why?

Here are a few Reasons for marking wrong answers:
1. Students know the concept, but in a hurry they mark the wrong answer.
2. The calculation part took more than 90 seconds and still the student is not sure of two options, marks a fluke and gets the answer wrong
3. The student is working at an extremely high speed and the accuracy falls dramatically

What makes us mark a correct answer in the mock CAT?

After talking to a lot of students and observing their attempts, I found out that students choose the correct option when:
1. They know the formula (Quant. or DI) or meaning (Vocabulary) and patiently crack the question
2. They are wise in picking up the questions they know they can solve
3. The question is very easy to solve
4. The question came from a topic, whose concept the students have revised twice
5. The question belongs to a series of questions in a Case let, and the students have invested a few precious minutes to crack it

The setting and the form of question paper for CAT-Quant. is not a routine matter, the types of questions and the format keep changing with every session.
There are certain topics like Algebra, Functions and Geometry which are repeatedly tested in the CAT Questions.
Algebra includes Polynomials, Progressions and Inequalities.
Let's pick up Polynomials.
In polynomials the stress is on Quadratics or Quadratic Inequalities.

Consider a Quadratic Polynomial f(x)= a x^2 +b x + c
It represents a Parabolic Curve;
If a> 0, then the Convexity is downwards with minimum value at x = -b/(2a)

If a<0,>Convexity is upwards with maximum value at x = -b/(2a)

Taking D = b^2 -4ac,
(1) If D <>, the polynomial has no real zeroes
(2) If D = 0, the polynomial has two equal zeroes , both equal to -b /(2a)
(3) If D > 0, it has two real and unequal zeroes

This shows the kinds of results from such an equation.

TOEFL-IBT TIME BOUND PREPARATION

TOEFL-iBT tests the candidates on their Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing Skills of the English Language. There are four separate Modules for testing each of these skills. Again, in the Speaking and Writing Modules there are Integrated Tasks that collectively assess the test taker’s Reading, Listening and Speaking/ Writing skills.

TOEFL-iBT is a time-bound test where each Module / Section and in some sections each question, has a fixed time limit. For instance, in the Speaking Module, when the time (sometimes in seconds) elapses for a question, the screen automatically moves on to the next question. The student should be well aware of this aspect and should keep an eye on the Timer.

Preparation for such a time-bound test entails that even without looking at the timer, the student gets to know that the time is about to elapse. In the Speaking Module, for example, the student gets 15 sec. or 30 sec. to prepare the response. S/He needs to manage the time between finding content for the answer, organizing it and checking for Vocabulary, Grammar and Rhythm. If s/he has to keep track of the time as well, things would definitely go out of control. Therefore, it is highly recommended to practise these questions so well, that without even looking at the stop-watch, the student gets an idea about the time.

The question that springs up here is how do we find and plan the response in this restricted time span. The first step is to leave the mind open, no boundaries of experience, judgement or prejudice. Remember, TOEFL-iBT tests the student’s English language abilities and not the Emotional Quotient. In a way, there’s hardly any need to get attached to what s/he actually think of a particular topic or context in a question. The student should concentrate on Brainstorming points as much as s/he can in the time assigned for the task. In summary, the student should avoid being rigid when it comes to planning and preparing the response.

Next, the student should brief up his notes-making. No full-forms, no sentences, just words and phrases to mark the notes. Again, the notes should be legible and organized, so that the student is able to give the response from the notes and not lose points because of the unorganized scribbled notes.

There are innumerable factors to be kept in mind while preparing for a time-bound test, but the matters ease out when the candidate is good at Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing English.
