Skipping Questions in CAT

Why do we skip questions?

1. We don't know how to crack the question
2. You didn't see the question

Put in other reasons as Comments

Why do we choose a WRONG option in CAT?

With the threat of Negative Marking looming large on our head, we are very careful while marking answers in CAT. Still, we get some questions answered wrongly. Why?

Here are a few Reasons for marking wrong answers:
1. Students know the concept, but in a hurry they mark the wrong answer.
2. The calculation part took more than 90 seconds and still the student is not sure of two options, marks a fluke and gets the answer wrong
3. The student is working at an extremely high speed and the accuracy falls dramatically
4. The student does not know 5 questions in a row and marks randomly in the next question
5. The student's basic concepts of Grammar, Vocabulary, Formula's are not clear

Reasons abound, think of more and put them as Comments to this post

Reasons for getting an Answer Right in CAT

What makes us mark a correct answer in the mock CAT?

After talking to a lot of students and observing their attempts, I found out that students choose the correct option when:
1. They know the formula (Quant. or DI) or meaning (Vocabulary) and patiently crack the question
2. They are wise in picking up the questions they know they can solve
3. The question is very easy to solve
4. The question came from a topic, whose concept the students have revised twice
5. The question belongs to a series of questions in a Case let, and the students have invested a few precious minutes to crack it

There are plenty of other reasons. Just put them as COMMENTS to this post

CAT Question Answers: Algebra

The setting and the form of question paper for CAT-Quant. is not a routine matter, the types of questions and the format keep changing with every session.
There are certain topics like Algebra, Functions and Geometry which are repeatedly tested in the CAT Questions.
Algebra includes Polynomials, Progressions and Inequalities.
Let's pick up Polynomials.
In polynomials the stress is on Quadratics or Quadratic Inequalities.

Consider a Quadratic Polynomial f(x)= a x^2 +b x + c
It represents a Parabolic Curve;
If a> 0, then the Convexity is downwards with minimum value at x = -b/(2a)

If a<0,>Convexity is upwards with maximum value at x = -b/(2a)

Taking D = b^2 -4ac,
(1) If D <>, the polynomial has no real zeroes
(2) If D = 0, the polynomial has two equal zeroes , both equal to -b /(2a)
(3) If D > 0, it has two real and unequal zeroes

This shows the kinds of results from such an equation.

You may put any CAT Questions on Algebra as a comment to this post and get your Doubts clarified

CAT Question Answers: Analogies

Tricky as they are, Analogies test the students expertise in Vocabulary and the usage of words.
CAT questions on Analogies entail the test taker to identify the relationship between the given pair of words and choose a pair of words carrying the same relationship, out of five such options.

These relationships could be:
1. one is an EXAMPLE of the other
2. one is a TYPE of the other
3. one is a PART of the other
4. one is a QUALITY of the other
5. one is an INSTRUMENT of the other
6. one is at a LOWER/HIGHER INTENSITY than the other

In simple words, the relation can be defined in terms of WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHY, WHEN, HOW...

Students use their knowledge of Roots, Prefix and Suffix to crack questions on Analogies.

Try out some more techniques, put your doubts on Analogies as Comment to this post.

CAT Questions Answers: Sentence Rearrangement

Questions on Sentence Rearrangement in CAT require the students to have a good knowledge of Transitions, Linking Words, Pronouns, Tenses and Sentence Structure.

A typical question on Sentence arrangement consists of an opening and a closing sentence with four other sentences in between which have to be logically arranged. The student has to pick up a grammatically correct sentence arrangement from a set of 5 choices.

All doubts relating to questions on Sentence Rearrangement can be put as comments to this post.

CAT Questions Answers: Sentence Correction

In CAT, Sentence Correction questions are very easy to answer.
These questions test the student's knowledge of English Grammar (Verbs, Nouns, Adverbs, Adjectives, Tenses, Determiners, Auxiliary words; almost everything) and Vocabulary.

In a typical Sentence Correction question, a long sentence is given and the whole or a part of the sentence containing the error is underlined. The question also contains answer choices in which the given sentence is framed in different ways and the student has to pick up the right one.

You can put all your doubts on Sentence Correction as Comments to this post.

CAT Question Answers: Sentence Completion Questions

Sentence Completion questions are commonly found in tests like CAT, and GRE.
In a typical Sentence Completion question, the test taker is supposed to fill in the blank/blanks with either a single word or a phrase in each blank.

The Sentence Completion question tests the speaker on:
1. Grammar: Sentence Structure, Tenses, Nouns, Verbs, Adjective, Adverbs and more
2. Vocabulary

Believe it or not, the Sentence Completion questions can be solved with great speed and accuracy.

Vocabulary: PRECEPT or PERCEPTION

PERception: link this word to yours or somebody's way of thinking, similar to opinion. PERCEPTION is a Noun and its Verb form is Perceive.

PREcept, again a Noun; refers to an authoritative instruction, mostly religious commanding moral obligation.

In a question on Sentence Completion, Sentence Correction or Sentence Rearrangement; two options would be based on Perception and Precept.

Time bound preparation for TOEFL-iBT

TOEFL-IBT TIME BOUND PREPARATION

TOEFL-iBT tests the candidates on their Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing Skills of the English Language. There are four separate Modules for testing each of these skills. Again, in the Speaking and Writing Modules there are Integrated Tasks that collectively assess the test taker’s Reading, Listening and Speaking/ Writing skills.

TOEFL-iBT is a time-bound test where each Module / Section and in some sections each question, has a fixed time limit. For instance, in the Speaking Module, when the time (sometimes in seconds) elapses for a question, the screen automatically moves on to the next question. The student should be well aware of this aspect and should keep an eye on the Timer.

Preparation for such a time-bound test entails that even without looking at the timer, the student gets to know that the time is about to elapse. In the Speaking Module, for example, the student gets 15 sec. or 30 sec. to prepare the response. S/He needs to manage the time between finding content for the answer, organizing it and checking for Vocabulary, Grammar and Rhythm. If s/he has to keep track of the time as well, things would definitely go out of control. Therefore, it is highly recommended to practise these questions so well, that without even looking at the stop-watch, the student gets an idea about the time.

The question that springs up here is how do we find and plan the response in this restricted time span. The first step is to leave the mind open, no boundaries of experience, judgement or prejudice. Remember, TOEFL-iBT tests the student’s English language abilities and not the Emotional Quotient. In a way, there’s hardly any need to get attached to what s/he actually think of a particular topic or context in a question. The student should concentrate on Brainstorming points as much as s/he can in the time assigned for the task. In summary, the student should avoid being rigid when it comes to planning and preparing the response.

Next, the student should brief up his notes-making. No full-forms, no sentences, just words and phrases to mark the notes. Again, the notes should be legible and organized, so that the student is able to give the response from the notes and not lose points because of the unorganized scribbled notes.

There are innumerable factors to be kept in mind while preparing for a time-bound test, but the matters ease out when the candidate is good at Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing English.

All the best!

Confidence Level

Confidence is a feeling, an expression that exhibits the superior power or performance of the person possessing that Confidence Level.

There are instances when this Confidence simply oozes out of the speaker and spell bounds the audience into deep silence.

Let's consider a few traits that any confident orator possesses:
1. A clear throat
A strong voice with a clear throat is a very effective tool to catch the listener's attention. How do you feel when the host of the Conference or the Chairman of the Meeting has a sore throat or keeps on saying 'aaaa', 'uh', 'ahem' during his speech? Step into the listener's shoes and deliver your speech with a clear throat.

2. A smiling face
Even if you are talking on the phone, the person at the other end, can make out the expression on your face. Try this out with a friend and you'll understand the importance of smiling while speaking.

3. Glitter in the eyes
This shows the speaker's interest and pride in what s/he speaks. If you speak with a sparkle in the eye, people will enjoy your speech as much as you'll be enjoying.

4. Pauses at the right places
A good speaker knows where to give a brief pause and where to give an elongated silence. This brings out the level of practice that went into preparing for the Speech.

Cultural Differences in Communication

In a famous book on Shogun Management, the author brings out the differences in the level of communication of the Americans and the Japanese at the work place.

He elaborates how the Americans believe in fully expressing their thoughts and that too verbally; any vacuum in speech disturbs them and is highly unwelcome. On the other hand, the Japanese pick up Non-Verbal cues and give importance to silent contemplation during discussions and meetings.

Workplace Conversations

Making Preparations for a Meeting

Well, there are a few things that I want to bring up today for discussion. But, before we get on to those matters, I want to run through the schedule for next week’s sales conference. One of you asked me if we could talk about the new office, but I’d prefer to leave that aside for today and come back to it some other time. I’m sure I don’t need to spell out how important it is that we’re all thoroughly prepared for the upcoming conference, so maybe we can deal with that first. So, let’s have a quick run through of the schedule and discuss each event in detail.

Mistakes while making Introductions

Being a Spoken English faculty and a Soft Skills Trainer, I come across a plethora of people.
Different people INTRODUCE themselves differently.

But some errors just creep in every time....

The most glaring one being:
Myself Mr.ABC,...

Please understand that we should not use "myself" for introductions. The better way out is "I am.."
Again, we never address ourselves as "Mr./Ms". We introduce ourselves with just our name.

so,
I am Namrata Arora.....

would sound a proper introduction than

Myself Miss Namrata Arora...
